About Joyful Jubilant Learning
A Letter from our Managing Editor, Rosa Say
Aloha mai kākou.
In the moment that I write this, a brand new year is just three days from now: We will forever know it as 2008.
When 2008 does arrive, Joyful Jubilant Learning will begin the fourth month of its second year. Who are we?
We are a book-nurtured and blog-supported community, and our "who" is fascinating, global and diverse.
The book was one I had written and published in 2004, calling it Managing with Aloha. The blog was (and still is) called Talking Story.
Joyful Jubilant Learning was
initially the name of an annual writer's forum hosted by Talking Story to
celebrate "All Things Learning" in our shared belief that learning is
the ultimate miracle worker. These community-written pages and this creative force of optimism we now call JoyfulJubilantLearning.com was one of the miracles created. Essentially we are now an ongoing forum fueled by monthly themes, where place-connected words and the "power of We" sustains the miracle of the Ho'ohana Community.
Up to now, we have honestly been somewhat of an experiment by a group of people who simply loved learning. We admired and respected each other, we found supporting each other natural and easy, and along the way we discovered that learning in each other's company was great fun — it was joyful.
Today, with this reflecting back on our history, I am better able to explain what we have become: An exceptionally special Place.
Some will say we need a vision and a mission.
Some will say we need a growing community model and a business plan.
Perhaps later. Or perhaps not.
We have the universal values of Aloha, and they are serving us well.
For now, we are a Place for the Ho'ohana Community to share their experiences within joyful learning, whatever their vision, or their mission borne of the aloha within them. You will find more stories here of when, how, why and from who we have learned what we have, rather than the how-to of detailed lesson plans, logs or chronicles, and you will find many, many expressions of joy. You will find possibility.
We love to capture wonder, being a Place for more community miracles to grow.
For now, that is more than good enough for us, and for this Place. In fact, it is amazingly special.
Place provides belonging. Joy is powerful. To have a
Sense of Place which comforts, affirms and inspires you to make learning miracles in the company of others is an extraordinary gift.
And it is an abundant gift, one we'd love to give to you too.
You
are warmly welcomed to be part of the Ho'ohana Community and join us here.
Know this: The Ho'ohana Community is a network of good people.
We have come together both by chance and by intention, feeling we were called by the values and spirit of Aloha.
Hearing the call, we answered it, and we stayed. Visitors became host and hostess, generous people the Hawaiians of old called Mea Ho'okipa, those who serve others lokomaika'i, with the generosity of good heart. Our writers are not paid: They give to you freely. Those I call editors give freely as well: They write, design, plan and organize, helping me maintain our professional dignity as online publishers so our Place is worthy of you. All are Mea Ho'okipa, givers who have learned about the miracle of 'Ohana, community defined by Aloha.
